Common Raw Materials Used in Artificial Turf

Feb 5th,2026

Artificial turf is widely used in landscaping, sports fields, and commercial areas due to its durability, low maintenance, and consistent appearance. This article introduces the main materials used in artificial turf and explains their functions in a simple and practical way.

1. Grass Yarn Materials

Grass yarn is the most important component of artificial turf, directly affecting appearance and touch.
The most commonly used material is PE (Polyethylene), which is soft, flexible, and highly resistant to UV radiation and weathering. PE yarn is widely used in landscaping turf and high-quality sports turf.
PP (Polypropylene) yarn is also used in some products. It is more economical but generally stiffer and less durable than PE.

2. Primary Backing Materials

The primary backing holds the grass yarn in place and provides structural stability.
It is usually made of PP woven fabric, which offers good tensile strength and dimensional stability, ensuring the turf remains firmly constructed.

3. Back Coating Materials

Back coating secures the grass yarn to the backing fabric.
Common materials include:

SBR latex: cost-effective and widely used

PU (Polyurethane): more durable and environmentally friendly, often used in premium products

4. Infill Materials (Optional)

Some artificial turf systems, especially sports turf, use silica sand and rubber granules to improve stability and shock absorption. Landscaping turf usually does not require infill.
